“As a 10 year old boy, I stood triumphantly on the highest point of the derelict Kenmure castle - the silhouette of the castle walls, crumbling turrets, empty windows and gaping doorways, like some uneven jagged ogres mouth.

I imagined myself as a Scottish warrior, or grand explorer, discovering the secrets of the past. At that time I would never have imagined I would return, decades later, after travelling the world and delighting in other cultures, to literally walk back through the playground of my youth. I dare you to lose yourself like I did, to travel back in time. To experience the magic that Galloway has to offer.

I created the Galloway Distillery to champion and celebrate the unique terroir and history of this beautiful corner of Scotland. A homecoming and new chapter, in the pursuit of fine spirit."

Let us introduce you to our beautiful home, the mighty Galloway Distillery. Founded by Sam Heughan in 2025, it was always a personal dream of Sam’s to create a home for The Sassenach. Inspired by the unbreakable connection to his native land this new distillery represents a homecoming back to his roots in these bonnie lands of Galloway.

In our journey since launching The Sassenach in 2021 to worldwide acclaim and a multitude of awards, the same passion has been applied to our growing collection of carefully crafted spirits.Within our new home a new bond and friendship was also forged with the local lads, behind the critically acclaimed Hills & Harbour Spirits which can also be found at Galloway Distillery. Together, our dedication and passion continues to inspire meticulously crafted spirits.

Galloway is an inspirational place. It has unique heritage, folklore, landscapes and people. Very accessible yet remains an undiscovered and ancient land. Like many of us Sam is a local lad. Growing up in the remote, detached freedom of Galloway has a big impact.

In Galloway we Spent our youths exploring the wilds, and our imaginations. Whether it be a day filled of being a Scottish warrior, kings of ruined castles, communicating with the past at standing stones or being chased by mythical ghosts through the forest, our way is carved by these surroundings.

Galloway does something special to you if you let it. It creates vivid imaginations, inspiration, creativity and curiosity. This is how we approach everything, leading everything we do, driving us to go much further.
